What's your opinion on using alternatives for mesa-libGL(U)?

Hi,

I'm wondering what you're opinions/arguments for or against using
alternatives to symlink the libraries of mesa-libGL and mesa-libGLU.

One advantage of this system is that for users who have the nVidia or
AMD/ATI drivers installed is that games which have /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
hardcoded won't be having so much trouble anymore getting their games to
work properly. The proprietary libGL files can be placed somewhere
without overwriting libGL.so.1.2 and the symlink will point it to the
right place. Another advantage is that switching between drivers becomes
a breeze - Simply relink libGL.so.1 and change /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

However, you can also argue that it isn't much better that ldconfig or
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=[...]

What do you think?
