That analogy works both ways :-) If you just installed FC-6 from DVD, you're missing all security updates issued since FC-6 was released. Say a package maintainer is on vacation and a broken dep is still around. You have a dark house full of murderers, but you can't turn on the lights to expose them because a closet light bulb is out...
