Take a look at RULE (Run Up2date Linux Esomething)
It's a modified RH/Fedora installer designed specifically to work with
older hardware.

I have used RULE in the past and come to think of it I seem to have dropped off thier mailing list when they moved servers. Totally coincdentally I tripped over the Pentium II box I had RULE running on so Ill try a reinstall with the Fedora Slinky. Incidentally the Slinky Detect and DAn: Distro Analyizer tool discussion on their site http://www.rule-project.org might be pertinent!
