In my opinion what you write is currently, unfortunately, plain utopia. I think you got a lot of inspiration about your site-wide writings from MS-AD. As far as I know, AD is not an LDAP. It is a proprietary configuration container which parts of it, not all, can be exported as an LDAP directory. But I'm not a specialist in this subject. About LDAP being a configuration containter, check this, which I'm not sure also if it is accurate: http://www.libelektra.org/LDAP_and_Other#LDAP Generaly, you can't get rid of configurations completely. But you can make them so marginal and easy to handle that softwares will interoperate with them by themselves, without asking you many questions. See, Elektra or any similar thing, is far from being a solution for the configuration problem, but at least it unlocks our current static position of zero-interoperability. If, in a dream, Elektra or any similar thing gets adopted, the day after will be filled with debates and a lot of work about the better way to define a semantical tree of system parameters. In the second day after, we'll start see programs integrating themselves alone, and higher value being added in the stack. Lack of automatic configuration will be a shadow from the past. While today we are stuck in "proprietary" configuration silos from Apache, Samba, X.org, network, Gnome, KDE, /etc/* , and can't move forward thowards this higher value stack. We are loosing a lot of time dealing with OS internal interoperability, while the rest of the world is making huge steps in the business (higher) value space. We need to take a lof of steps to achieve the desired utopia you outlined. Elektra is a small first one.
