@matthew,
I did not say that we mean something of that or that we should or should not mean any of that. The truth is, words not only have a denotation, they also have connotations. They might be positive or negative. For me, the connotations of the word "karma" are positive and I cannot come up with a negative one. Therefore, I am not convinced the word itself could be a problem.

In the past when Bodhi was still in development versus in production (2012? 2010?) this was brought up by a couple of people who weren't exactly offended but also felt the term was off putting from their way the term was used. It was brought up that Karma is not just a term in Buddhism but also in Hinduism and I believe several other religions. In most, it refers to a cause and effect of actions

 You give something good karma, you and the people connected to you get good karma. You give bad karma, you and others get bad karma.

Which leads to the problem that you don't want to give bad karma to anything, even a broken package. Instead if you can give good karma to something broken you should do so in order to help yourself.

Explained that way, I have seen the term the same as doing 'math' in PHP. It works for people who know the 'misuse' of various factors, but you can end up with very odd results for people who are used to math in many other programming languages.

Anyway, I believe that is how the previous conversations back then went. I remember a lot of similar bikeshedding and also kicking the ball down the court because it was a LOT of rewriting.
