You describe the use of the word from the perspective of newcomers.
But I think this misses an important function of the term: it has a
very precise meaning for people who are permanent contributors.
If I say "the update had negative karma", everybody knows _exactly_ what
this means. Once we replace "karma" by an immediately-understood but
generic term, we'll need to clarify _those_ uses.
