I wonder, hasn't this discussion been side-tracked a little bit?
Looking at the bug report linked in your first post, a big part of the
recent size increase were *media codecs*, which I'm pretty sure are
definitely not needed during install (decoders for JPEG-XL and AVIF
images, or AV1 video, etc.).
Unless I'm reading things wrong, dropping these from whatever they are
pulled in by (GStreamer / WebKitGTK?) would make a much bigger
difference than dropping a few firmware files?
