FWIW, this is mainly because early Git was unable to cope with huge histories, converting old history to another format isn't straighforward, and the history is immutable.
Earlier history is out there and there are ways to `graft` it to a current repo to locally join the histories together. See e.g. https://stackoverflow.com/a/8130239/99057
