OK, I think I see what happened. We had a big push a couple years ago to remove dbus-python as a dependency of GNOME, which was mostly successful (except for avahi and one or two other small things). I guess we must have been treating it as deprecated because it was still using libdbus-glib. So maybe it's kosher again now that it no longer uses libdbus-glib? (Thanks Vojtĕch for pointing out that major change.) At least, I don't see any other reason why we would want to get rid of it, especially considering upstream is still active.
So: I think I'm wrong, no need to start another wholesale migration away from dbus-python just because GNOME did so.
