Actually, this can be improved very easy in $HOME/.rpmmacros. I use
this:
%_topdir      %(echo $HOME)/build
%_sourcedir   %{_topdir}/SOURCES/%{name}
%_specdir     %{_sourcedir}
%_srcrpmdir   %{_rpmdir}
