I think it may depend on the type of package, for some SIGs at least I think auto-retiring a needed working package is also rather frustrating since it generates extra work for the SIG to recover that package.

Talking of which I just filed two review requests for ghc-fgl (which I had untired last year) and ghc-setlocale:


which will unbreak xmonad and darcs. :-)
