Long term... i think this is the start of an equitable solution. If Core is going to continue to be 'general purpose' there must be a way to repackage Core for 'specific purposes.' However from my perspective over here on the grassy knoll outside the red hat fenceline... I honestly don't think Red Hat currently has the ability or political will to expend the resources to make spinning up mutliple 'official' usage case mediasets. For this to work, I believe that the sheparding of use case mediasets needs to be expanded to include community and the trademark guidelines re-worked to allow for anyone in the community to pull packages from Core and Extras to create use-case media sets as they see fit without official blessing. I would point to mozilla's new tiered trademark policy that allows for community editions to be built as an example of how to expand trademark policy in a community inclusive way to allow community to accomplish use-case oriented mediasets that are instantly distinguishable from the 'official' sets. Mozilla's model would lead to things named like Community Core - Usage Case Edition Release Number, for community built mediasets that include only unmodified Core packages to serve a defined usage role. Community Core - Mail Server Edition Release 7.003 for example. -jef > > What would have then is: > > 50% of the users only need to download CD 1 and 2 > 30% install CD 1-3 of their use case > 15% install CD 1-4 of their use case > 5% want everything (the DVD) > > (numbers made up / guessed) :) >
