Those projects chose font upstreams that had no interest in encouraging contributions (either because they were “professionals” or because they were overcommitted one-man operations). They didn't invest anything to make sure contributions could happen or would be welcomed. It was shameful, even granddaddy Bitsream Vera was better organised. As a result contributions died down. That's what the ”professional” mindview gets you: dead projects with no live community and no future once the contractor funds die down.
