Please, don't rewrite history, DejaVu had already proven at that time
fontforge was more than good enough for a complex modern font.

Those projects chose font upstreams that had no interest in encouraging
contributions (either because they were “professionals” or because they
were overcommitted one-man operations). They didn't invest anything to
make sure contributions could happen or would be welcomed. It was
shameful, even granddaddy Bitsream Vera was better organised. As a
result contributions died down.

That's what the ”professional” mindview gets you: dead projects with no
live community and no future once the contractor funds die down.
Especially when you make sure to market the resulting font as an
identity marker, so everyone understands it's your business and your
business alone to improve the font, and third parties are not welcome.
