I'm working on getting such a functionality into libyui; my current
mock-up is based on ENV:${XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP}. I'll file a PR during
later today to libyui.

The version of libYUI [1] coming to f2{4,5,6}-updates-testing with tonight's push, is capable of doing so.
