A real 1280*960@17" screen is 100dpi (you can do the math if you want).

I did the math ;-) Looks like:

displaysize should be 13.58" x 10.19" (assuming 4:3 display ratio).

So horizontal: 1280/13.58 = 94.25 dpi
   vertical:   1024/10.19 = 100.49 dpi

Correct me if I am wrong -- this was quick calc.

X reports that my display is 96 dpi, which looks like some "average" of what I just calculated.


The reason windows is stuck at 96dpi is lots of first-gen 17" makers
cheated and their products were either a bit smaller or could not fill
all the glass space (you were stuck with a black band around the
picture)

At 100dpi AA looks good in all reasonable sizes (I'm not talking about
the people that burn their eyes on < 10pt fonts)

It does look ok on LCD.

However I still like my xterms with bitmap fonts -- they are superior sharp. I use other apps with AA and it's ok (e.g. Eclipse with Courier).
