xmms uses gtk1 and doesn't seem to be needed; should it be removed?

No, there is no other nice-looking mp3/ogg/... player in FC.

... The controls are badly organised

what would be the alternatives? Some Gnome UI crap where half of the important options can be configured with regedit only?

BMP looks good on the first glance (the screenshots); I just hope that
it is a 1:1 gtk2 rewrite of xmms, and not something which tries to bring
Gnome2 ideas into it (like galeon 1.3 vs. 1.2)...

You can get BMP from newrpms repository:

bmp
bmp-mp3
bmp-extra-plugins

Apparently BMP is a fork of xmms and it feels like in many ways. Hint: do not try to run it when xmms is running -- it won't start. Quit xmms first.
