Apps that try and use them just hang. linphone sometimes hangs for me so I have to fix it by: # rm -f /usr/bin/pulseaudio;killall pulseaudio Without that 'rm' pulseaudio just restarts itself and linphone still hangs. But right now it is working for me. I just need to be careful not to open mixer before starting a call so start of the call is deafening me but when the call is already running I can run mixer and set its proper volume. It happens even after I bought another USB soundcard so that I can use it for linphone as pulseaudio did always grab only the first/primary soundcard. Recent pulseaudio unfortunately started to steal all the devices it can find. Using linphone over pulseaudio also did not work for me in the first place as it was delaying the voice making any chatting impossible.
