Methinks you need to stop trying to "mother" the users.

If you share a computer then it is potentially a disaster to destroy 
a machine by making a mistake as root. However if it is a single-user
system and the user loses his machine because of mistyping then there
is an educational moment happening. Besides learning that typos are
more costly as root they learn that backups are sometimes useful.
