If it's throw away database info that can simply be reconstructed I'd probably tolerate it. But for that matter, such things should go in an defined cache location so that it's not even being backed up. But important user data having it's format updated in a way that makes it incompatible with the previous minor version (same major version)? I'm snickering at the language that would ensue in the proprietary software world, if I'm not totally confused about what it is you're suggested is fair game. It'd be the sort of language you wouldn't want your teenager or grandmother to hear.
