I believe with RAM prices and therefore RAM sizes nowadays you will still have overall better system performance with prelink. I understand you may find a machine low on RAM where the overall performance with prelink will be lower. That is a special case, not an average user. You can uninstall prelink on such underpowered machine. I have no numbers to back my performance guess above.
