Yeah, as a sysadmin I'm mostly annoyed by services that send mail and expect someone to have time to read them. Give me a current status that can be monitored as appropriate (desktop notifications, Nagios etc) and logs so I can go back and see what went wrong. Also, I think people who are new to this stuff are much more likely to look for logs than for mail ("what, computers can have mail on them?") when they're trying to figure out what's happening. It is however a bit scary if the behavior of cron changes when someone installs an MTA.
