Because maybe your computer boots just fine but you're screens are all garbled or just black.  Been there, done that.  Yes, I could blame Nvidia for not giving me a FOSS driver, but: my work computer came with their hardware, I have a 4-headed display and I've never been able to get any FOSS config to support this as much as I would much prefer that.

Personally, I would never think to go into a control panel, but that's just because I've got a gray beard and do things the "hard way" because that used to be the "only way".  I'm not suggesting that new ways aren't possible or preferable, but we should preserve traditional methods if there's no or little harm in doing so.
