We, who abandoned gnome when it became gnome shell, didn't so only because of the DE interface, but also because removing features, forcing choices on you, arrogant know-it-better-than-you devs etc. Just having two panels with applets won't make me happy if it's littered with symbolic icons, just as much as the gnome apps which are having with each new release less and less (useful) features. I only wish those people hell bent on keeping forking gnome would invest their time on improving the existing alternatives instead (XFCE and LXDE), it makes more sense to me, as at least XFCE-4.10 isn't much lacking and with a bit of tweaking even looks and behaves rather similar when compared to gnome-2.32...
