I can't answer the _detailed_ part of your question, but, F18 has version 1.0.4 of the open source Nouveau driver, where as F17 shipped with a git snapshot named '0.0.16-34.20110720gitb806e3f' and later updated to '0.0.16-37.20120306gitf5d1cd2'.
