Correct. The autotools are not guaranteed to be backward-compatible.
Therefore, blindly running some arbitrary version of the autotools on an 
arbitrary source tree often (and very often silently) breaks building.

This is only possibile in simple cases and if upstreams write proper 
configurations - Many projects do not.
