Editing the code is the wrong way to make "simple local changes".

According to the explanations given elsewhere in the thread, the idea is to 
have much of the stuff done directly inside the init system instead of 
softcoding (cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softcoding, 
http://thedailywtf.com/Articles/Soft_Coding.aspx) it as scripts.
