Can you check /var/log/Xorg.0.log , and see what that says?

If your monitor is actually capable of 1280x1024 (*properly* capable -
if it's an LCD whose native resolution is 1024x768, this behaviour is
not a bug, it's correct), then it's certainly a bug for X not to detect
this, and you should file it:
