FDA NEWS DIGEST -- JUNE 3, 2002 SOME PRODUCTS CAN BE APPROVED FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSES WITHOUT HUMAN TESTING -- Certain drugs and biologics intended to treat serious or life-threatening conditions can now be approved for marketing based on animal studies when human studies are not ethical or feasible. FDA issued the rule to boost the nation's ability to respond to medical emergencies, including terrorist events. http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2002/NEW00811.html PENNSYLVANIA FOOD COMPANY RECALLS ICE CREAM AFTER PACKAGING ERROR -- Kemps Foods is recalling 1/2-gallon containers of its Hagan Pennsylvania Vanilla Ice Cream because they contain peanut butter ice cream. The company took the recall action after a production error resulted in packaging that did not indicate presence of peanuts, which can cause serious allergic reactions in those sensitive to them. http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/kemps05_02.html ANIMAL, HUMAN RISK PROMPT RECALL OF DRUG FOR HORSES -- Equine Miracle Corp. is recalling its Miracle Leg Paint for horses because the product contains a mercuric chloride blistering agent, a poison to animals and humans.
