Press Release – FAA Statement-Update on Chicago Air Traffic FacilityFor Immediate ReleaseOctober 10, 2014 O’Hare was the nation’s busiest airport for the fifth day running yesterday. Arrivals and departures at O’Hare ended the day yesterday right at 100 percent of the two-month average for a Thursday and at more than 92 percent of the two-month average for Midway. In spite of wind conditions today that reversed the direction of arrivals and departures at O’Hare to the East, the number of O’Hare flights was above 94 percent of the two-month average at 1 p.m. CDT and the number of Midway flights was above 91 percent. Controllers and technical teams at the Chicago En Route Center in Aurora, IL are continuing end-to-end testing of equipment and systems at the facility in preparation for a gradual transition back to full operations from Sunday night to Monday morning. After they have confirmed all of the systems are operating normally, they will start to transfer airspace back to Chicago Center from the surrounding centers in Kansas, Indiana, Ohio and Minnesota, as well as from the Chicago Terminal Radar Approach Control facility in Elgin, IL. The FAA is closely monitoring weather forecasts for Sunday and Monday that currently project possible thunderstorms in the Chicago area as early as Sunday afternoon. Chicago_Update |
