As far as I remember from my experiments with HPPA machinery, gcc3 is the
only way to actually compile the system on a pa-risc machinery...

(Although  you will mostly need software from alpha.gnu.org... ;)

gcc2.96 did not even bootstrap  on my pa-risc box...
