What kind of encryption? One thing I noticed about dmcrypt: obviously it cannot exploit both cores as good as other encryption software. And it would be interesting what kind of encryption you use. A 8400 Wolfdale (3GHz, dualcore) can reach a maximum of slightly over 200 MB on 256bit AES. If one core is exploited this would go down to something around 100 MB/sec, and 512bit give an additional slowdown.
