as you didn't use luks it takes your passphrase to encrypt the data.

so you won't be able to change your passphrase without reencrypting
the whole disk. with luks only the master key is reencrypted with the
new passphrase...
if you have the chance if i were you i would make the effort and start
again with luksformat. you also get the possibility to have up to 8
passhphrases, with your current setup you only could have the one.
