The way I understand it, your key is used to protect the
key used for encryption of the partition, which is stored in 
the LUKS header only. So no LUKS header - no way to access the 
data.

Side note: It is possible to make backups of the LUKS header.
Side note2: Never experiment with life, not backed-up disks.
