Performance and safety of AES256-'multi-key-v3' versus AES128-v1

I made a drive using this setup:

offset=8192 encryption=AES256 multi-key-v3

Now, throughput on my rather weak Linux-running pentium 200MHz fell when upgrading from plain v1-AES128. This is not surprising; however multikey-v3 also eats more processing power, am I right?

Is AES128 safe enough in your mind Jari; I see you use it in your examples in the README. Downgrading would give me better performance I suppose.
