My openGL support comes from
http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/1.0-6111/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-6111-pkg2.run.
It´s a 7MB package from Nvidia that gives SuSE 9.1 64-bit hardware
acceleration and open GL. I need it to play dvds / xvids on MPlayer.
This shell-script does whatever it wants to. To my knowledge a module named
"nvidia.o" is compiled and loaded. lsmod shows a module named nvidia so
that´s for sure not a userspace app.

Using some openGL app is one sure way to make the PC hang or stutter. For
instance glxgears runs fine appart from some stops. I don´t mind these
problems that much because I am not dependent on 3D Games or screensavers.
Anyway a crash can allways happen. The thing is that a crash should not be
that devastating to smash a whole filesystem. Fsck should be able to fix the
occuring errors.

I don´t know what happens when mounting an ext3-fs. You have to mount it
with mount -v to see a journal replay message, right?
The crash happens when I start openGL games or the box gets overheated on
hot days and heavy load. Transcode makes intensive use of the cpu for 12 and
more hours.
When it comes to upgrade / recompile I can only say that I use the most
recent openGL driver from Nvidia and my config is the most closest possible
to SuSE 9.1 64-bit. I didn´t upgrade the kernel, so it is still 2.6.4-52
with the changes needed to put it on a USB stick and boot the box with
loop-aes.
If someone reading this has experience with ATI graphics cards on SuSE I´d
like to read about it! I do not know which hardware manufacturer offers
better support.

Regards,
Peter
