I have had such problems on a file backed loop with cryptoapi, I think it was, 
and a reiserfs file system and a crash that did involve a lockup that was X 
windows related. It was a while ago, and the solution was to tar the valuable 
data and create a new encrypted file system. I simply did not trust that 
encrypted container anymore. I've never had trouble with reiserfs and 
loop-aes.
