Great. Looks like I'm pretty much screwed anyway. I'm running 2.4.20 mainline. I'll go look for the RedHat 2.4.20 kernel tonight...

Hey, would this (running 2.4.20 mainline in a RedHat 8 system) explain why I often see startup/log messages like this:
modprobe: cannot locate device block-major-2
also, same as above, but block-major-10
