Aptiutude can help you know why, with its "why" ciommand !

On my workstation, for example :

$ aptitude why libgfortran5                                                                                                                           

i   ardour         Dépend libqm-dsp0         
i A libqm-dsp0     Dépend libatlas3-base     
i A libatlas3-base Dépend libgfortran5 (>= 8)
