is there already a migration approach with minimum downtime for the non-containerized setup when using CephFS?
The problem I see would be that after reducing to a single active MDS per rank, upgrading that "in place" would mean machine reinstallation.

Would the following approach work?

1. Reinstall a standby MDS (upgrading to CentOS 8 and Octopus), but do not start the actual service yet.
2. Shut down all other MDS of that rank, and start the new MDS on the freshly installed node.

This should minimize the downtime to the "failover time" as usual.
Should that work without issues?

If so, we'll try that out sometime summer next year on a less critical cluster ;-).

Cheers,
	Oliver
