In case it helps you, I'm about to go down the same Supermicro EPYC and SM863a path as you. I asked about the incompatibility you mentioned and they knew what I was referring to. The incompatibility is between the on-board SATA controller and the SM863a and has apparently already been fixed. Even if not fixed, the incompatibility wouldn't be present if you're using a RAID controller instead of the on board SATA (which I intend to - don't know if you were?).
