Re: Replication Ratio

Very interesting ... thank you for pointing me on that.

By reading http://tracker.ceph.com/issues/4929, it seems it is a pretty new feature.

When you say "you can use it with RADOS", you mean it is already well tested and stable ? Or something like "not so far from production readiness" ?

Best,

Cédric

Hello Cepher,

As my needs are to lower the $/To, I would like to know if the
replication ratio could only be an integer or can be set to 1,5 or
1,25 ?
In others words, do Ceph can compute data parity or only do multiple
copy of data ?

No, that is not possible with simple replication.

You might be able to use the upcoming Erasure encoding which Ceph has
to offer, but it depends on your use case.
Could you give me more information about this feature (infos, URL) ?

I suggest you read these links:
* http://www.slideshare.net/Inktank_Ceph/erasure-codeceph
* http://wiki.ceph.com/01Planning/02Blueprints/Dumpling/Erasure_encoding_as_a_storage_backend * http://ceph.com/docs/master/dev/osd_internals/erasure_coding/developer_notes/

You can look at it kind of similar to "raid over the network", but it isn't that!

How and what kind of data do you want to store on Ceph?
I am evaluating an object storage solution, mainly for backup/archiving
purpose.

If you are only going to use the RADOS Gateway to do object storage you can use Erasure encoding. It doesn't work well with RBD or CephFS.

Wido

Sorry in advance if this is a basic question !
