Using C5.1 and KDE, I use the kNetworkManager built from fc6.

#chkconfig NetworkManager on
#chkconfig NetworkManagerDispatcher on

#/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start
(ditto for dispatch)

Anything that shows from
#iwlist scan

also shows in the knetworkmanager AP list.
