That sounds like the X server trying to start and failing. It did just as you describe about 8 times. I JUST experienced the same thing on a Fedora 8 install. Although, it finally failed and asked if I wanted to view the log and manually configure.... I had an un-identified monitor..... It sounds like you might have removed X already too, so ignore this if it's not relevant...
