Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC’s response to the outbreak of A(H5N1) bird flu in dairy cows most recently includes social media targeted to farmworkers in affected communities on the risk of working with infected animals and what to do if they develop symptoms; providing technical assistance on a planned serological study of people exposed to sick cows in Michigan; and a strategy for enhanced nationwide surveillance throughout summer.

Health Care Surveillance Would Likely Detect Novel Influenza Virus Infections in People in the United States, CDC Study Finds

A new CDC modeling study suggests influenza testing in health care settings in the United States can serve as an effective warning system in the event of an outbreak of a novel (non-human) influenza virus with pandemic potential. The findings point to the role health care providers play as a first line of defense by testing for flu and forwarding clinical specimens to public health laboratories.

CDC Reports Third Human Case of H5 Bird Flu Tied to Dairy Cow Outbreak

A third human case of H5N1 linked to an ongoing multistate outbreak of bird flu in U.S. dairy cows was reported this week, the second such case in Michigan. This is the first human case of H5 in the U.S. to report more typical symptoms of acute respiratory illness. All three cases had direct contact with infected cows, with no evidence of person-to-person spread. The risk to the public remains low.
