Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC’s response to the outbreak of A(H5N1) bird flu in dairy cows most recently includes sequencing the virus from the second human infection, which occurred in a Michigan dairy farm worker; supporting Michigan with its investigation; and new resources, including an information sheet for dairy farm workers outlining how infections could occur and how to prevent them.

CDC Survey Points to Preexisting Level of Public Health Preparedness for H5N1 Viruses

A CDC survey done before the A(H5N1) outbreak in dairy cows found that nearly all U.S. states had monitored persons exposed to A(H5N1) viruses in animals, primarily poultry or backyard bird flocks. However, two-thirds of jurisdictions said lack of personnel and/or funding had hampered their monitoring efforts, highlighting the need to strengthen public health preparedness for HPAI A(H5N1) viruses nationwide.

CDC Reports Second Human Case of H5 Bird Flu Tied to Dairy Cow Outbreak

A second human case of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection linked to the ongoing outbreak in U.S. dairy cows was identified in a Michigan dairy farm worker, who reported only eye symptoms. CDC has determined that the clade 2.3.4.4b virus is closely related to the viruses that are circulating in dairy cows, the overall risk to the general public remains low.

DYK? We have candidate vaccine viruses (CVVs) that could be made into vaccines if new bird flu viruses emerge that have pandemic potential. These vaccines are made with the same technology used to make seasonal flu vaccines: Learn more about CVVs: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/candidate-vaccine-virus.htm
