Update on CDC’s Avian Influenza A(H5N1) “Bird Flu” Response Activities

CDC’s response to the outbreak of A(H5N1) bird flu in dairy cattle most recently includes plans for enhanced surveillance during the summer months and a pandemic risk assessment of the virus from the human infection in Texas using the Influenza Risk Assessment Tool (IRAT). CDC continues to support states monitoring people with exposure to infected cows and other animals.

CDC Website Now Displays Influenza A Wastewater Surveillance Data

CDC recently launched an influenza A wastewater surveillance dashboard displaying data from more than 200 sites across the country. Wastewater surveillance complements existing human influenza surveillance to monitor influenza virus trends. Current monitoring methods detect H5N1 viruses but do not distinguish them from other influenza A viruses or determine their source (e.g., humans, animals, or milk).

#FluFact CDC regularly develops candidate vaccine viruses (CVVs) as part of pandemic preparedness activities. These viruses can be used to make vaccines that would protect against #birdflu if needed. Learn more about CVVs https://bit.ly/3yecaiB
