The Piedras Blancas Light Station, in San Simeon, California, recently celebrated the 15th anniversary of National Conservation Lands, highlighting it’s model for partnership, where the effort of numerous agencies and organizations come together to ensure that the lands, marine environment, natural resources and culture of the area is at the forefront of managing the Outstanding Natural Area (ONA). National Fishing and Boating Week

This week is National Fishing and Boating Week and a perfect time to get out and enjoy an ‪adventure‬ on ‪ my public lands‬ during‪ Great Outdoors Month‬. The Trinity Wild and Scenic River, managed by the BLM Redding Field Office, is an excellent place to celebrate with world class fishing and boating opportunities. (BLM Facebook)

Napa Mustang Days

The northern California premier showing of “Unbranded,” a documentary film about a wild horse ride across America, will be part of Napa Mustang Days, an equine festival and adoption event, Friday through Sunday, June 12-14, at the Napa Valley Horsemen’s Association Arena in Napa. Horse and burro training demonstrations will be featured during the weekend along with food, beverage and information booths. (BLM Facebook)

Did you know?

Questions are often asked about this crazy, alien-esque, orange vine that you see growing on trees and shrubs in the desert. This plant is actually native to the desert – it is called dodder, or Cuscuta denticulata. As you can see, this plant has tiny orange vines that wrap themselves around other desert plants, and itty-bitty white flowers. (BLM Website)

Fire Restrictions on Wildlands Announced

Napa Valley Register, 6/9/2015
The Bureau of Land Management is implementing fire restrictions on public lands managed by the Ukiah Field Office in Napa, Lake, Mendocino, Sonoma, Yolo, Colusa, Glenn and Solano counties, citing the heightened fire danger. The fire restrictions go into effect Wednesday and will remain in effect until further notice. (Read full story)

California Setting New Solar Records at Rapid Pace

California generated a record amount of solar power last week — but don’t expect the high mark to last long. The state has already set 14 solar records this year, including the latest high of 6,078 megawatts of simultaneous solar generation. (Read full story)

Feds Recommend Trimming Proposed Solar Plant

Associated Press, picked up by San Francisco Chronicle, San Diego Union-Tribune, Sacramento Bee, KTVN Washington, etc.

Federal officials are recommending that a proposed solar project in Southern California be downsized by about a quarter to address concerns about the potential impact on bighorn sheep and to make sure the project won’t be seen from most of the neighboring Mojave National Preserve (Read full story)

California Lawsuit Seeks to Block Oil Drilling on Federal Land

Reuters, 6/10/2015
Environmental groups on Wednesday filed a lawsuit challenging a plan to open large portions of federal land in central California to oil drilling, saying it did not consider the impacts of fracking on the environment. (Read full story)

My Public Lands Roadtrip in BLM Idaho Begins at the South of the Snake River

The South Fork of the Snake River flows 66 miles across southeastern Idaho, through high mountain valleys, rugged canyons, and broad flood plains to its confluence with the Henry’s Fork near Menan Buttes.  Since 1985, the river has been eligible for inclusion in the nation’s Wild and Scenic River System. My Public Lands Summer Roadtrip Stops for Birdwatching at Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area in Idaho

Congress established the Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area in 1993 to protect a unique environment that supports one of the world’s most dense concentrations of nesting birds of prey. A part of the BLM’s National Conservation Lands, the area’s 485,000 acres host some 800 pairs of hawks, owls, eagles and falcons that come each spring to mate and raise young. (BLM Tumblr)

What do California newts eat?

c. They eat bugs

Adult newts eat small invertebrates such as worms, snails, slugs, sowbugs, and insects. They also consume amphibian eggs and larvae, including newt larvae and newt eggs. Larvae typically eat small aquatic invertebrates and decomposing organic matter.
