I think I know how to fix that one as well.  What is the name of the actual device being used.  Use something like 

wodim --scanbus

as root and see what the name of the device is.  If this doesn't work, try 

cvlc dvd://1 /dev/sr0

and see if that works.  The only problem you had here was that the program couldn't actually find the dvd reader.  If this can be found, the problem 
will be solved.
