It's a professional audio application, so it can be expected to be complicated. It's also worth mentioning that the entire professional Linux audio world uses Jackd rather than PulseAudio; the latter is considered to be a consumer-grade tool that doesn't provide the low latency and other features required for audio production purposes. I'm not personally involved in this area, so my ability to help is limited to general Linux knowledge.
