I'm one of the few blinkies who likes Cygwin. The advantage is that you can
switch between Windows and Cygwin programs without having to reboot. The
disadvantage is that it's noticeably slower than Linux. Whether it's
unacceptably slower depends on what you're doing; in Widows XP it's really
pretty good, especially as a getting-started system.
Another advantage is that you can install Cygwin (it takes somewhat less
than 5 GB if you install everything) and then use your regular screen reader
to read it until you get brltty set up.
The Cygwin installer is generally considered inaccessible. This is untrue.
It's clumsy if you try to do more unusual things, but it's doable.
